Where Should You Travel On Your Gap Year?

For many young people, their gap year is a huge part of their lives. It gives them a chance to leave behind the surroundings of their education and get a look at the real world for a while. As such it is something that many look forward to ' and once they have done it, they never forget it either.

Since you typically have a whole year to enjoy and explore the world in, it makes sense that you would want to make the most of it. Some people decide to visit one country in particular and enjoy the experience of living there and almost becoming a part of it. Popular countries in this respect include Australia and America, although some students choose to visit other locations as well.

Backpacking is another popular way to enjoy a year out. It enables you to take everything you need in a backpack and travel light. This means you can move on from place to place without making many firm plans if you wish. However if you decide to do this you should always keep someone aware of where you are going to be. Tell your family where you are going and when you should get there, so they know not to worry if you aren't in touch for a couple of days.

You don't have to go to far flung countries to enjoy your gap year though. Many people decide to travel around Europe, which gives you plenty of nice destinations to enjoy. Think about the hot countries of Spain, Portugal and Greece for example. Alternatively you could try out more unusual destinations such as Lithuania, Romania and countless other countries as well. It all depends on what you want to get out of your trip.

Some people like to have a more focused gap year though. It is possible to book a trip that enables you to help out in another country. This is hard to beat as a proper learning experience that you will take with you no matter what else you do in life.

For example you could work on a volunteer project in a disadvantaged country. There are lots of community projects going on in various parts of the world, and these are ideal if you want to work during your gap year and you want to make it worthwhile. Alternatively you could go on a prolonged tour such as a wildlife themed holiday or an expedition of some kind.

As you can see there are plenty of different options available for gap year travel. What you decide to do will depend on your ambitions and perhaps even what you intend to do when you come back. Either way, the experience really is a once in a lifetime one.
